One of the first pellet stoves to emerge in this country 15 years ago, the P61 is still churning out heat. A few improvements, such as automatic ignition and a more sensitive temperature control, bring it up the standard of Harman's other solid fuel stoves.
This is a stove that can throw off some heat – up to 61,000 BTUs per hour – but is still attractive enough to be front and center in a living room. The optional slate panels that grace the swing-out ash door come in four designs. The viewing window and heat output grill can be further enhanced with optional trim packages in gold, stainless steel or bright nickel.
The hopper can hold 72 pounds of pellets. An optional hopper extension can hold another 50 pounds of pellets, meaning less time feeding the stove. A patented pellet feeding system allows the stove to burn any grade of pellets and to burn at a very low rate. The stove has precise temperature control thanks to an ambient air sensor that feeds information to the stove's microprocessor. The stove adjusts itself, even turning off and back on again, as needed.
Other options include a battery backup, ceramic logs, side wall heat shields, and venting kits.
