If you think a spiral staircase is tricky to navigate, imagine having to do it in the dark in an emergency.
Running on electricity with a battery backup, the Spiral Stairlighting Kit ensures that each curving step will stay lit whether or not you have power. The battery backup lasts for 12 hours or more.
The kit is meant to provide everyday, not just emergency, lighting. A light sensor turns the system on and off automatically. The three-beam LED spotlight design softly illuminates each step.
Wires are hidden in sleeves that attach discretely to the stairs. The sleeves come in black or white and can be painted to further blend in.
The direct current transformer also charges the batteries and is both Energy Star certified and UL listed. You can override the sensor to keep the lights on or to turn them off if you're going to be away.
Using less power than a 9-volt transistor battery, the LEDs last for 12 years.
The LED lights and compact transformer/battery charger stay cool, so you don't have to worry about kids or pets touching them or about fire hazards.
Designed by three boating buddies -- an aircraft mechanic, an electrical engineer and a stair maker -- the kit can be installed in a few hours. Bought directly from the manufacturer, the kit contains everything you need for illuminate six steps. It even comes with its own tool kit -- a phillips screwdriver, tape measure and wire cutter.
Lighting for additional steps and a landing is also available.
The spiral kit is designed for open, metal stairs. The company also makes and sells kits for open and closed indoor and outdoor staircases.
