Celebrated for saving lives, the humble smoke detector gets little respect as a design element.
One manufacturer is trying to change that. The Silhouette from Kiddie has a slim, half-inch profile. It's hard to make a hunk of white plastic attractive, but the Silhouette is at least less obtrusive than other models. And once it's installed, the Silhouette is maintenance-free.
Since it needs to be hard-wired into the home's electrical system, the alarm is meant for new construction or renovation projects. The lithium backup battery recharges using electricity from the hookup. It never needs replacing for the 10-year life of the alarm.
The alarm can be linked to other electric alarms in the house so that all sound at the same time. In the event that you inadvertently set off the alarm while burning your morning toast, you can hit a switch to silence the alarm for seven minutes.
The alarm costs about $113 and is available in -- you guessed it -- white.
